Project Information Profile Title:Development of Suyac Mangrove Eco-Park Description:With Man's wanton abuse of the environment in Sagay waters in the early 1980's, the then municipality of Sagay, now the city government of Sagay started the marine conservation and protection program to deter the further destruction of this portion in the Visayan Sea. Visayan Sea is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Philippines. The 32,000-Hectare was also declared a protected seascape through the Presidential Proclamation 592 and National Integrated Protected Act System (NIPAS) The then congressman now Governor of Negros Occidental authored a National Law institutionalizing the protection through RA 9106, "An Act for the Establishment and Management of SMR" which became the Sagay Reserve Law. Sagay Marine Reserve was recognized nationally and internationally for its sustained environmental programs. Though we are rich in marine bio-diversity, our fisherfolks is one of the most disadvantaged sector. We can clearly see poverty in most of the fishing villages. Hence, it is important that we afford our coastal communities with the real opportunities for sustainable livelihood, inter-generational equity and social justice. Sagay City Government started laying down the foundation of the Sustainable Tourism in 2011 incorporating its guiding principle "tourism enriches, protects and help build communities". The sustainable tourism master plan was completed and submitted for approval last 2015 and this will serve as the blueprint of Sagay's tourism development. Through participative planning and perception survey, the new eco-tourism branding: "Sagay City: where love for nature begins" was also coined.
